Podcasts for Social Workers

Social Work month is here and we’re celebrating you, our amazing clients! We’re on the hunt for great resources, ideas and articles to share with you to make your work a little easier your day a little brighter. Today, we’re talking about podcasts, both for personal fun as well as growing your agency’s reach in your community.

Even if you aren’t a podcast consumer, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the increasing popularity of podcasts: from true crime and daily news, social issues, comedy and all things cats, there’s a podcast for everyone about anything. Why not spend your commute time learning how to build a healthy new habit? Or listen to the ladies from the TV show “The Office” hilariously break down each and every episode while you’re walking the dog? There are even podcasts about how to start a podcast!

Podcasts are fantastic not only for entertainment and education, but can be a great way to connect with your clients and donors while building community. We won’t get into the nitty gritty of starting one here, but there are great resources online including this FAQ list from Apple.

Here are a couple of great examples from two of our clients for inspiration: Amara and Adoption Star.

If the idea of starting a podcast makes you want to run for the door, another option is to appear as a guest host on someone else’s podcast. This can increase your agency’s reach as well as build instant trust and authority with potential clients.

Start by doing your homework. Listen to several podcasts looking for hosts with topics that your clients might be listening to such as adoption stories and parenting. Then, reach out by sending a pitch email to the host to see if you might be a good fit for them. Remember to make the pitch about how you can help their audience including the top 3 key takeaways (tips, info, etc.) that their audience would walk away with at the end of the interview.

“Every company can find authentic stories related to their brands, whether those stories are revealed through interviews, investigations, or real-life demonstrations. With some serious thought about what kind of stories your brand can tell and a commitment to honesty, you have what you need to begin making an engaging podcast, no matter what industry you’re in.”
— Nicole D’Angelo, Associate Editor with Skyword

Just for fun, we’ve included a list of some of our favorite podcasts in the personal growth, social work, parenting and self care genres. It is by no means an exhaustive list of the thousands of podcasts out there, just a few of our favorites. Enjoy!
